Biography
Wayne Koonce has compiled a remarkable real estate M&A record over the past 30 years. As president or managing director of real estate merchant banking firms, he has orchestrated over $8 billion of hotel, resort and mixed-use developments, acquisitions, sales and refinancings. He has also been active in M&A fields beyond real estate, concluding several hundred million dollars worth of deals. Mr. Koonce's track record includes engineering the largest hotel deal ever done: The acquisition of Inter-Continental Hotels (109 first-class hotels worldwide - $2.3 billion) - at the time (1989). Additional deal credits include: La Costa Hotel and Spa ($250 million) Washington Harbour ($250 million) Hyatt Regency Waikiki ($245 million) Chicago Sun-Times ($150 million) Hotel Washington ($119 million) Hotel Hana Maui ($100 million) Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat ($30 million) Dana Point Resort ($40 million) Drake Hotel ($55 million) |
Peninsula Hotel, 730 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago: He engineered the formation of this partnership, including $165 million of equity and debt financing, to develop this as the keystone of a large mixed-use development.
Mr. Koonce has also engineered a substantial number of hotel and other deals in the $5 to $40 million range, including such properties as The Cliffs at Shell Beach, The Hyatt Westlake Plaza, The Colonial Inn of La Jolla, the Social Security Building, Mercedez-Benz of Beverly Hills, The Morgan Bay Resort, The Inn of the Anasazi, among others.
He is a preferred partner of UBS Wealth Management.
He currently is active around the globe, with a base of investors and clients in the United States, Latin America, Asia and Europe. With his increasing focus on sustainable development has come a growing involvement in sustainable tourism in Africa and around the world.
Mr. Koonce's background in corporate law working for a top international firm and as an honors graduate of Harvard Law School provided the foundation for his unique skill set. He brings strong investment banking/financial analysis abilities, as well as a proven talent for negotiation. He has a particular aptitude for working cross-border with different cultures. And he has strong expertise in structuring start-ups, strategic planning, spotting opportunities to expand and grow businesses, and raising early stage capital for start-ups.
Koonce received his Bachelor's degree with highest honors from the University of Illinois, a Master's degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University, and a Juris Doctor degree with honors from the Harvard Law School.
Honors include the Henry Luce Scholarship, the Danforth Fellowship, the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, the Max-Rheinstein Prize in International Law, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa.
